Long afflicted with the pesky habit of preserving in writing those observations, vignettes, questions, quips, it's natural for me to seek a way to share them. This blog, I hope, will offer such an outlet, and let's both hope we find it entertaining.
Since much of my free time is spent appreciating the natural world in some way, it's likely much of the content here will have some tie to the outdoors. After a career in the legal world, I can't help but try to analyze situations and organize them, bring order out of chaos, but my aim will be to avoid the more boring aspects and keep things interesting and informative.
So welcome, reader, to my initial effort at blogging. I hope we'll both find it worth our time.

- Careers in law and newspaper reporting, with some teaching thrown in, have led me to spend much of my time working on natural resource issues: coldwater conservation, public lands, watershed restoration, wildlife and fisheries management. These days I work with a national coldwater conservation group, Trout Unlimited, on a project which promotes and organizes watershed restoration across the unglaciated (or "Driftless", for its lack of glacier-ground rocks and gravel) area of the Upper Mississippi River Basin. Issues arise and need to be investigated and responded to by people with strong interests, using a strategic planning approach and thoughtful leadership. My writing includes examining issues, questioning interesting people, exploring wild places, and entertaining with lighter, more humorous pieces and memoirs. Enjoy!
